Frodingham Road 'Welcome' Arch

Despite the very disappointing early returns from our public survey – responses which in some instances demonstrate how poorly Crosby is viewed – the Town Team is determined to seek local community support for this exciting project.

The first thing to say is that Scunthorpe Renaissance Town Team IS NOT the council.

Over the years we have acted as a pressure group against, and turned over, some North Lincolnshire Council's activities and policies. The Coop Sportsfield, the once derelict Majestic Cinema eyesore site and saving Queensway Family Field from redevelopment as a housing site are just three examples of how effective we have been in halting council plans.

We are hopeful, with this project, of working with the council as we did with the erection of the Peace Pole in Central Park. We are NOT, however, seeking funding from council tax – the substantial funding for the arch project is intended to come from voluntary contributions and sustainable development grants. Such grants are accessible to voluntary organizations and social projects and if North Lincolnshire fails to get its share the money goes to other towns!

Our intention will be to work with schools, the local community, local colleges and

local businesses to do the design and manufacture – and, of course, the arch will be fabricated from steel made in Scunthorpe.

The intention of the arch is to act as a fitting symbol to celebrate the rich multicultural diversity in this unique area of Scunthorpe. We hope it will help to instil local pride, counter the current negative views of the area and act as a catalyst for regeneration and area improvement – we expect it to open up public funds to clean and refurbish the area and reduce crime. In future we hope it might act as distinct attraction to locals and visitors alike.

We will be continuing our community consultation at the Crosby International Day at Gresham Hall on the 21st of July when a Town Team 'Have your say' display will be in evidence and Town Team Members in attendance. We look forward to seeing you -

we believe the arch has the potential to be a proud landmark for the local area and for the town.
